First of all, this chiffon was love at first sight for me--it is so soft and feminine...which is exactly what I like to wear. It drapes nicely, too, and the colors are gentle and sweet.

This entire top was made on a last minute whim. I had a much excitedly anticipated date :) the next day and wanted something flowy and feminine to wear...and just happened to wander into this fabric. Problem solved--it was meant to be. So I bought it and the pattern and rushed home to whip it out, haha.

The pattern I chose is Butterick 5463, and I made view A in a size 8. I chose it because it looked flowy. The top only took about 2 hours to make as it is basically two rectangles with a flounce attached to each sleeve. The most difficult part was hemming the chiffon. I learned to just go s.l.o.w. As difficult as it was to not zip along as I like to (hehe), I was happy that I took my time because my hems came out better than they normally do when I use chiffon.

The only gripe I have with this top is that when I wear a belt with it and move my arms alot, the sides pull up...but it's not a huge deal and I guess I can live with it ;) you can see this happening in the front view in the pictures above.

Altogether a simple top to make. I love how it came out--the chiffon is really what makes it just lovely :) Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-87349599061673946432013-06-16T21:19:00.001-04:002013-06-16T21:23:15.465-04:00: : :Polka Dots: : :

I made this dress to accompany a friend to a wedding. I love polka dots, so I thought this dress would be perfect...and black and white is always a classy combination. So I decided on a jersey knit polka dot fabric, and then chose Simplicity 1612 because it looked fairly simple (am still new to knits!).

Simplicity 1612. I made view A, which is a knee length knit dress with a twisty tie front and cut-out back.My fabric was a stretchy jersey knit. I made a size 8.

This was a super easy dress to make. I had no issues with fit or construction. The only alterations I made were taking in the back seam and elastic about an inch and adding the black ribbon just under the bust. Oh, I also left off the sleeves because I wanted to pair this dress with the little black jacket (also made by me).

It can easily be dressed down by leaving off the jacket and wearing a black T-shirt underneath for a sort of jumper dress effect--which makes the dress more casual. So there it is! There's not much else to say, except that it's altogether a fun dress! :)

The wedding was lovely, and yup...everybody liked my dress. ;) Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-61177421085114911362013-06-10T16:53:00.000-04:002013-06-10T17:07:23.343-04:00: : :Blue Floral Top: : :

I've had this floral blue fabric for about 6 years now because I was saving it for I don't know what. Well, I finally decided to dig it out of my stash and make something with it. I thought a lightweight overshirt sort of top would be nice for summer. I'm not sure what type of fabric it is, but it looks like chiffon and feels like cotton. It is see-through as well...and very soft.

I made view A in a size 8. It's a super comfortable top that can easily be dressed up or down.

Construction was super easy. I didn't make any changes besides gathering 2 inches on the sleeves and then securing the gathers with a button. I also added a button to the back tuck---but these are just aesthetic changes...nothing to do with fit. The fit of this top is not very flattering, but I don't really mind because the fabric I used is very flowy and sort of moves with me.

I probably won't make this top again, but I am overall satisfied with how it came out.
Another great blouse pattern. I used <strike>woven chiffon</strike> some sort of thin seersucker (thought it was a woven chiffon...but no it's not, lol), and it came out sooo comfy. It has tucks in the front and the back, and gathered sleeves with a band at the bottom of each. It also has a collar.

The instructions were great for this pattern, I had no troubles with the construction. I made a straight size 8 with no adjustments. This top is super flattering and has a great silhouette. I like it. :) It is easy to dress up with a skirt or to wear casually with jeans. Perfect for work and play.

Definitely will make again. I think it is suited to drapey fabrics, though, because it might lay a little bulky if you use something heavier...I'm not sure though, it just seems like that might possibly be the case. So I'll wait for another cute lightweight print to "jump out at me" before making again.

I've made this blouse three times. Third time's the charm.
The first one was two sizes too big. The second one was plaid, and my
lines didn't match up. This one came out purrrrfectly lovely.

Everything about this blouse from the tied sleeves to the sweet collar to the delicate tucks remind me of the perfect blouse to wear on a date--hence my title, haha.

I made a size 8 straight through, but ended up taking in the side seams 1/4". I had absolutely no problems with this pattern. I've made it three times after all, but the construction of the first two versions went smoothly as well.

My favorite feature of this particular blouse is the scooped collar and the tied sleeves.
Simplicity 1664

I bought Simplicity 1664 about two days ago because I fell in love with the jacket and the pants...but...when I got home I realized there was this cute little skirt included! :) Sweet. Especially since I spent more than I like to normally spend on a pattern. Anyway, I dug up this red and black cotton that I've had floating around for months now. And...wah-lah...a new skirt.

Simplicity 1664 is a quick and easy pattern. There were no issues...and it literally took 2 hours (that includes hand sewing the hem and yoke facing, lol). The pattern is basically two rectangles gathered onto a yoke. I made a size 12 and used an invisible zipper. I made the hem 1.25" wide.

This skirt is nice for winter as I have it above...and it will be great for summer, too. Double win. :)

Only thing is...I sorta feel like minnie mouse in it, haha...but that might be related to my choice of shoes ;)

I adore scarves in general...but am in love with infinity scarves right now. :) This particular scarf is perfect for sitting in freezing classrooms. I crocheted it a few days ago using homespun Lionbrand yarn and a free pattern from Lionbrand.com...and the best part about the pattern? It only took about 2 hours to finish. That's what I call a sweeeet pattern! :D
Oh my! Is it nearly February already? Seems like yesterday was September and the beginning of my junior year. And it's sad to say, but I've not sewed a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. since September. I started this dress in August, and had it all finished except for the hem within a week. I finally hemmed it last week. January 21. Yes, I know. Extreme procrastination, right? But...it is really, actually finished now...and I can hardly believe it! Now I can move on to other projects....

So...Simplicity 2174...a versatile pattern with several combinations for nearly any look you're going for. I had some plum-ish linen laying around, so I decided to make a winter dress with 3/4 sleeves. This pattern was exactly what I was wanting. There are two features about this dress that I love--the neckline and the pockets! Cute, cute, cute. It's subtle cuteness...but cuteness nevertheless.

I made a size 8 straight through. I had no problems, no frustration, no roadblocks, no troubles--this dress was smooth sailing. I don't know why I didn't just hem it back in August. haha. But movin' on from that...I used an invisible zipper, hand-stitched the hem, and it was a fantastic pattern. What I love about the Amazing Fit pattern line is the bust options...sometimes I get exasperated with always having to decrease the bust size on other patterns. So...I had no fitting issues with this pattern, and that in itself definitely makes it a keeper (plus it's cute, right!). I might just make a summer dress using this dress pattern...but haven't quite decided yet. I highly recommend it, and hope you'll give it a whirl if you're thinking about trying it out! :)Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-32991761534946370322012-09-03T15:23:00.001-04:002012-09-03T15:25:01.565-04:00Wildly Excited About . . .

I fell in love with this colorful fabric at Joann's, and knew right away that I wanted to make a laptop sleeve with it. :D So after browsing through hundreds of laptop sleeve patterns online, I decided on Lindsay's tutorial from her blog, The Cottage Home. She has an awesome blog, and so many cute tutorials! I especially loved her laptop sleeve tutorial. :) Excellent instructions and great pictures. I am happy with my laptop sleeve. It slips right into my black and white sling, and will be great for lugging my laptop to school. :)Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-27343093937673174152012-07-27T23:11:00.000-04:002012-07-27T23:52:26.597-04:00: : :A Thrifty Find: : :

I used Amy Butler's Sunday Sling pattern for this bag. I made the smaller version, which ended up being 18" wide, about 13" tall, and 2.5-3" deep.

The only change I made to the pattern is that I quilted my fabric to batting instead of using fusible interfacing. The pattern instructions get a little confusing in some parts, so you just have to go by the illustrations most of the time.

This bag takes F.O.R.E.V.E.R. if you quilt your own fabric . . . however, it is definitely worth it. Quilting the fabric makes the bag look so nice and finished. :)

This bag turns out to be super sturdy, and will make an excellent book bag. I love it! ;)
I have used this pattern before to make the larger bag--the 23" bag. After having made both sizes, I believe I prefer the smaller bag.
A comparison :) The larger bag would make a great weekend travel bag . . . if you do that sort of thing. Maybe someday I'll take a weekend trip somewhere, and will have a chance to use the larger bag. ;)
Butterick 5466, view C--a basic skirt pattern. There's not much to say about this pattern other than that it's fast and easy. Cute, too, of course--and a great wardrobe builder. ;)

I made a size 10, and used linen (which I found in the remnant bin at Joann's!). It came together nicely without a single hiccup--took me about 3 hours from start to finish. I made no alterations to the pattern, other than foregoing the belt that view C is pictured with. I like and highly recommend this pattern.Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-90893553808717231702012-07-17T20:20:00.004-04:002012-07-17T20:41:52.786-04:00: : :Little Brown Jacket: : :

Boleros and little jackets. . . I just love 'em. <3 Okay, now that that's outta the way, on to my review for this cute little jacket.

Pattern Description:

Cute little jacket, fully lined, and fairly loose fitting

Pattern Sizing:

I made a size 10

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yup . . . pretty much

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Super easy

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I love the way the pieces fit together on this jacket . . . very different and fascinating to me ;)

Fabric Used:

--Linen for the fashion fabric

--Quilter's cotton for the body's lining--it has bags of coffee printed on it! I love coffee...so this lining is officially awesome

--Slippery lining (it's name escapes me ;) ) for the sleeves

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

Because I made a size 10 to accommodate my broad shoulders, I ended up taking a slightly larger bust and side seam allowance. I also added a little clasp to keep the jacket from blowing open--it's super windy here.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Haven't decided if I want to sew it again--there are so many cute jacket/bolero/shrug/cardiagan patterns out there! However, I very highly recommend this jacket! As my brother would say, it's sweeeeeeeeet . . . . lol

Conclusion:

Love, love, love this jacket. I can't wait to wear it.

Quick note about my sleeves--> I wasn't originally going to line the sleeves because I hadn't done that before, and was feeling lazy. However, after nicely finishing the lining on the inside, I realized that I had done a sloppy job with easing in my sleeve caps. So reluctantly (very reluctantly) I unpicked all the serging and seams holding the sleeve caps in order to re-ease the sleeves in. Several hours later, I decided to just go ahead and line the sleeves. I mean, why not, right? So I did . . . and I'm happy about it. The jacket works much better with long sleeved shirts. Plus, I have that happy little feeling that I finally got around to lining the sleeves in something. ;)

Three things in the fashion world make me very happy--boleros, scarves, and hats! When I saw Vogue 8405, I knew I had to give this pattern a whirl.

I made view C, size small, in off-white linen. I did not use hair canvas for the interfacing, but just went with heavyweight interfacing. In the end, this hat could probably use a little more stiffness, so next time I'll probably use hair canvas as the pattern envelope suggests. (between you and me...I didn't feel like going out to buy hair canvas ;)

This hat took about 4 hours to make . . . . However, I do have some gripes with this pattern. The instructions were vague and sorta lame in my opinion--you just have to kinda go by what feels right, and rely on the illustrations. Also, maybe it was just me, but on piece 8 of the pattern (the piece that is attached to the crown), it clearly states that the seam where you sew piece 8 together is the center back. In reality, the seam should actually be on the left side--and not the back. This caused me 25 minutes of scratching my head in confusion. I just went ahead and put the seam on the side, and it doesn't seem to have drastically affected anything. As other reviewers on pattern review did not mention this, it was probably an error on my part. I hope I'm making sense. lol

For the brown band, I serged up a 2" strip of chocolate brown linen
(instead of ribbon) and just folded it so the serging didn't show. The
finished band ended up being a little over an inch wide. What makes this hat fun is that you can change the band anytime with minor effort to get a completely new look.

Anyway, other than some minor confusion about where the center back was on piece 8, this was a pretty easy hat that came together quite nicely. I rather think I'll make it again sometime soon. :)Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-25761470050174624792012-07-10T17:10:00.000-04:002012-07-17T20:05:52.329-04:00: : :Computer Bag: : :

My dad found this old computer bag, and gave it to me! My laptop is a 17" monster--thus it never fits in any normally sized backpacks or laptop bags. So. . . it fit in this bag, and that makes me happy!

However, the bag is rather boring looking. Therefore, I decided to embroider something on it.
I've been wanting to make this pattern for so long! When I had enough fabric left over from my yellow dress, I decided that now was the time to try out this pattern! :) Unfortunately, I didn't have much fabric to work with, so I had to cut the the pattern out on the bias--which made me nervous. However, it doesn't seem to have affected the way the top fits.

I made a size 8, with no alterations . . . it is super easy to make, and has great instructions--it came together like a dream.

This top is comfortable and classy--I am happy with it, and am definitely going to make some of the other versions of this top.Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-25220824725264154032012-07-03T13:58:00.000-04:002012-07-07T13:16:49.787-04:00: : :Cozy Winter Hat: : :

This is the first hat pattern I've ever tried . . . hats always seem intimidating to me for some reason. However, this pattern is so much fun! I had such a lovely time making the brown one, that I had to make the plaid version, too! It took me about 4 hours for each hat--and I didn't encounter any problems with the construction of them. The instructions are great. Also, the pattern is great for using up old scraps from other projects. I didn't buy any fabric for either of these two hats! (yippeee!)

For the sizing, I just measured the crown of my head, and made the directed size. I believe it fits just fine.

I didn't use fusible hair canvas for interfacing, either, as the pattern envelope suggests. I just used some medium weight fusible interfacing that I had lying around. The fashion fabric that I used is a semi-thick, woolly fabric--which probably helped to give the hat some body.

Also, I made the plaid version of this hat reversible. Instead of using lining fabric for the crown, I just went ahead and used my grey contrast fabric for the crown; and then attached the plaid flower. Surprisingly, the flowers are not uncomfortable when they are on the inside--I thought the button might dig into my head, but it does not. :)

Not only is this hat cute, but it's really warm, too. :) Great for cold winters. McCall's 6450 also includes a pattern for gloves, which I want to try now. It's hard to find affordable hats and gloves that are cute and classy--this pattern is an economical solution to that problem. :D
I used Newlook 6935. I fell in love with the bolero as soon as I saw the pattern! The only alteration that I ended up making to this pattern was that I made the sleeves longer, and then added little buttons to the sleeves to reduce the gaping at my wrists.

This little garment has made me fall in love with boleros and shrugs! I love them. :D Definitely planning on making more.Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-8803149732668590462012-07-01T22:49:00.003-04:002012-07-27T23:26:22.245-04:00: : :Yellow Dress: : :

My yellow dress . . . although it's not really yellow, is it? :) I guess I call it yellow because it is practically the only garment I own that has yellow in it.

I used Simplicity 1882 to make this dress. The fabric is a really soft, slightly stretchy cotton. I love it! I had no problems with this dress other than assembling the yoke incorrectly the first time. (I guess that's what instructions are for, huh? ;)Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6564211073657768784.post-84986058925301666722012-07-01T21:49:00.000-04:002012-07-01T23:33:53.288-04:00Welcome!

Hello! :) Welcome to my blog. It seems like everybody has a blog now-a-days, so I thought I might as well start one, too. My blog is going to focus on sewing--because I love to sew. Makes sense, huh? :D Hope you enjoy browsing through it . . . .Alisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05375039553983100025noreply@blogger.com0
